Legality: According to the Information Technology Act 2000 and the 2015 amendment, the publication or transmission of obscene materials, including adult movies, are prohibited in India. This extends to watching, sharing, producing, or selling pornographic content.
Internet Access: Indian government, in 2015, also banned access to websites that host pornographic material. As a result, many popular adult content platforms cannot be accessed directly in India.
Exceptions: Despite these prohibitions, adult content made for educational purposes or content with artistic value can be screened, but under strict regulations. This includes scenes or sequences in mainstream movies, television shows, or web series that depict certain adult themes under the pretext of narrative necessity.
Legal consequences: Any violation of these laws can lead to legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines. Contraventions are punishable by fines of up to 100,000 Indian Rupees and imprisonment for up to five years for the first conviction. For subsequent convictions, the penalties can increase to fines up to 200,000 Indian Rupees and imprisonment up to seven years.
